I’ve got to admit… I’m not a tech junkie. Although I’m fairly good with electronics (and I do love them!) I’ve never been the type of girl who absolutely must have all the newest gadgets the day they come out. Most times, I wait until an older gadget is on its last legs before I replace it. When something finally does go to gadget heaven, I usually don’t replace it with a top-rated item. I am a SAHM, after all. Gotta be frugal, and to be honest, I really don’t need all the bells and whistles in most cases. My cell phones over the years have been no exception. I’m waaaaaay behind all my friends when it comes to my phone. Recently, however, I made the realization that in order to survive as a successful supermom/entrepreneur, I was going to have to step up my game– I needed to get a smartphone.
Ok, I’d had my epiphany. Now all I had to do was find a smartphone with all of the features I wanted most: 4G speed, a large display, a good camera, a QWERTY keyboard, and a pricetag that wouldn’t make my husband laugh his head off. Enter LittleTechGirl, alter ego of my BFF, Kris Cain. She hosted an event with T-Mobile in November and I had THE BEST TIME in that T-Mobile store playing with all the newest smartphones. There was a Windows phone and several Androids I took a liking to, my favorite of which was the 4G Slide. The one I settled on, however, was the T-Mobile myTouch Q. (Cue harp music)
Since I didn’t have a smartphone, I was given the myTouch Q by LG to use for the duration of the party. I was a bit nervous about it because I didn’t want to look like a lame stumbling through installing apps and looking for features, but the Q is surprisingly user-friendly. It was actually designed for first-time smartphone users, and in my opinion, T-Mobile got it right! A wonderful T-Mobile rep walked me through a really quick tutorial that allowed me to set up my email, Facebook, and Twitter accounts in less than 5 minutes. I then played a game against another new-to-smartphones party attendee. We had to race each other to take and post a picture to our Twitter accounts using the Tweetdeck app, get driving directions to a nearby restaurant using the TeleNav GPS Navigator, and find and install an app from the T-Mobile Mall.
The myTouch Q fit all my qualifications. It runs on America’s largest 4G network, has a 3.5″ touch screen, full slide out QWERTY keyboard, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash (YES, it has a flash!!), and it takes great photos. Here is a photo of one of the helpful T-Mobile staff at the event:
The myTouch Q is just $79.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a 2-year service agreement and qualifying voice and data plan. Other great features of the Q include:
- Preinstalled 2GB microSD, expandable up to 32GB – because I love having pictures at my fingertips on my phone.
- Bluetooth® version 3.0 – gotta be hands-free while driving in Illinois!
- Built-in 3.5mm headphone jack – eliminates my need to wrestle with both an MP3 player AND my phone while on the treadmill!
- 3.5-inch TFT HVGA touch screen; 320 x 480 pixels – SWEET upgrade from my last flip phone!
- Dimensions: 4.7” x 2.5” x 0.51”; Weight: 5.6 ounces – big enough to hold onto, small enough to fit in my pocket!
Needless to say, I’ve had a ball with this baby. My fave feature on the Q? The Genius Button. BEST. IDEA. EVER. With a touch of this button, you can call, text, search the internet, or get driving directions simply by saying what you’d like to do. I don’t know about you, but the best thing that ever happened to me was GPS on a cell phone, cuz Mama gets lost. Easily.
Overall, I’m extremely impressed with the myTouch Q. It’s the perfect baby-step phone for first-time smartphone users: not in the least intimidating and still impressively powerful, fast, and packed with features. I’m no longer embarrassed to pull out my phone when it rings. In fact, I’ll be whipping it out a lot more often. 😉
Is it time to upgrade your cell phone? Were you hoping to get a smartphone for Christmas, but Santa didn’t get your letter? Maybe you wanted to give a smartphone, but weren’t sure which one would be best. Get over to T-Mobile and pick up the myTouch Q. You won’t be disappointed!
