On Monday, August 26th, my husband and I were fortunate enough to attend the opening night of “The Color Purple, The Musical about Love.” It was an awesome production set in the quaint and cozy Mercury Theater. The theater in itself was wonderful. I can’t imagine that there were any bad seats in the house; however, we had phenomenal seats.
Of course, I have read the Color Purple, seen the movie, and I have even seen the play starring Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, however, this was by far my favorite interpretation of Alice Walker’s great work. Let’s start with the singing, which was extraordinary. Each song from “The Good Lord works in Mysterious Ways” to “Push Da Button” and “Ms. Celie’s Pants” was done in the spirit of excellence. The entire ensemble was incredible!
The acting was also first rate. Each character performed with such commitment and integrity that I felt like I was hearing the story for the first time. This wonderful story of love, hurt, betrayal and finally redemption invoked a myriad of emotions. I laughed hysterically every time the nosy, gossiping church ladies came on stage. Their contribution to the production was wonderful. I also cried as I do each time when Celie’s children were taken away from her and at their joyful reunion. As I reached for my Kleenex, I think I also saw my husband dabbing at his eyes, but I am sure it was just his allergies bothering him. LOL!
What more can I say? I enjoyed this production immensely. I would go back to see it again with my girlfriends. I have already recommended it to everyone and I applaud the efforts of the entire cast! Job very well done!
