It’s baaaaaack! Woot woot! I must say that besides my birthday month, February is my second favorite month. My anniversary is in the month of February, there’s Valentine’s Day and then there’s always Chicago Restaurant Week! What could be better? If you haven’t tried a new restaurant or two during Chicago Restaurant Week, you’ve seriously been missing out! This year, Restaurant Week runs from Friday, February 1 through Sunday, February 10. There are over 250 restaurants to choose from in the Chicagoland area for a 10-day span at costs ranging from $22 to $44- that’s 2 weekends of getting it in!!!
With so many restaurants to choose from, it gets difficult to narrow it down to one restaurant recommendation. I had about 5 restaurants that I wanted to write about. I looked over the pictures and my eyes began to speak to my stomach. I finally chose Markethouse because their pictures spoke the loudest :D. No seriously, I believe Markethouse is one of the most overlooked, understated restaurants that I like. Tucked away in the lobby of the Doubletree Hotel, this restaurant is easy to go unnoticed. On my first visit there, I drove in circles for about 20 minutes trying to find it and I had a GPS!
The first time I visited Markethouse was with my husband on date night. The place had a very quiet, peaceful ambience – perfect for a romantic night out. We had the short rib burgers at the recommendation of my sister who had gone before us. The burgers were very good – excellent even, but we were put off by the service which was not as good. We later learned that a server or two had called in sick which forced the bartender and manager to pick up the slack as best they could. After speaking with the manager, we were offered another chance to return to the restaurant. I returned with my cousin and her 2-year old daughter and boy, did they lay out the red carpet!
Not only did the chef go through great lengths to accommodate the finicky taste buds of a 2-year old, but he went the extra mile to let this foodie sample just about everything on the menu. I could go on and on about what we ate and how great it was, but let me just point out what I thought was absolutely exquisite. The butternut squash risotto was my hands-down favorite! I have always been a lover of risotto and have found many good varieties at other restaurants. After tasting the risotto at Markethouse, I deemed it the best I’d had ever! The creamy risotto was seasoned to perfection with small, soft chunks of butternut squash and topped with succulent mushrooms – can you say YUMDERFUL?!?! Since Markethouse changes it’s entree offerings seasonally, the butternut squash risotto is not available on their Restaurant Week menu. However, there is heirloom squash risotto; I’m sure it is just as exquisite and maybe even better.
I sincerely hope you are able to check out Markethouse for Restaurant Week. If it doesn’t tickle your fancy, check out the list of over 250 restaurants in and around the city.
